Tim Donahue to receive Serge & Yvette Dadone Clinical Teaching Award

Post Date:May 20, 2022 6:00 AM

Timothy R. Donahue, MD, will be honored with the Serge & Yvette Dadone Clinical Teaching Award when the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine holds its annual Awards for Education Reception on June 7.

Dr. Timothy Donahue

Donahue is Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Professor of Surgery at the Geffen School, in addition to being a member of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. He says the award is bestowed for excellence in teaching both medical students and residents.

“It is an honor to receive the award,” Dr. Donahue said. “As academic physicians at a preeminent medical school and hospital, teaching and education must be one of our top priorities. It is extremely important that we train the next generation of academic surgeons and physicians.”

“I have been the Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program for the last six years,” he added. “We have a very academically oriented program and aim to train the next leaders in academic surgery. As part of our training program, we require the residents to do at least two years of dedicated research and scholarly work, completely protected from all clinical responsibilities. Many of them have worked in my laboratory on pancreatic cancer tumor biology. Most have been supported by NIH training grants and have both published and presented their work at national meetings. Most who have finished their training are working in academics.

“I am confident that the surgeon-scientist career path is still viable, and I remind our trainees often.”
