Dr. Joann Elmore, a professor of medicine in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has been awarded a $375,000 Michael and Jacqueline Ferro Family Foundation-MRA Established Investigator Award for Artificial Intelligence Applied to Melanoma. The three-year project will apply novel computer machine learning methods to identify and assess histologic features to help aid in the diagnosis of melanoma, the deadliest and most aggressive form of skin cancer.

Elmore and her colleagues have previously identified a concerning level of diagnostic errors in the interpretation of skin cancers, which can affect millions of people each year. This new project aims to improve the identification of high-risk lesions and invasive melanoma to improve diagnostic reliability, accuracy, and patient outcomes.

Elmore is the director of the UCLA National Clinician Scholars Program and a member of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Established Investigator Award supports researchers with an established record of scientific productivity and accomplishments.
