Cancer researcher honored for work benefiting patients and families

Dr. Patricia A. Ganz will be honored with the Clinical Research Award by the Association of Community Cancer Centers at the National Oncology Conference in October. Ganz, director of cancer prevention and control research at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, is being recognized for her pioneering work in research that has had a significant impact on oncology patients, their families and the community.

Ganz is a medical oncologist and a faculty member of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is also a distinguished professor of health policy and management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.

Throughout her career, Ganz has focused much of her efforts in the areas of breast cancer and its prevention. The other major areas of research she focuses on include cancer survivorship and late effects of cancer treatment, cancer in the elderly, and the quality of care for cancer patients.

For her work, Ganz has received numerous accolades including an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professorship for “Enhancing Patient Outcomes across the Cancer Control Continuum,” and the Susan G. Komen Foundation Professor of Survivorship Award. She also served on the National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Advisors and on the American Society of Clinical Oncology Board of Directors. She has been a member of the National Academy of Medicine since 2007 and chaired its consensus report in 2013 on “Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care: Charting a Course for a System in Crisis.”

The Association of Community Cancer Centers is an advocacy and educational organization with over 24,000 cancer care professionals working in 2,100 hospitals across the country. The Clinical Research Award has been given annually since 1987.
