Thyroid Cancer and Treatment

An estimated 64,000 new cases of thyroid cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2016. While the incidence is increasing, thyroid cancer has an extremely high five year survival rate and remains one of the most curable cancers.  Thyroid cancer, however, can have multiple steps in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease and receiving optimal treatment is important in ensuring the best outcomes.  Diagnosis, risk factors and the latest treatments are discussed in this lecture.  Surgical and local control of the disease through radioactive iodine are discussed as well as recurrent thyroid cancer and the types of standard treatments as well as the latest targeted therapies.  Regulation and monitoring of the patient’s thyroid hormone replacement during and post treatment is also discussed providing an understanding of what to expect and why ongoing care is important to overall well-being.
